It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, you rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then, just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops.

                                                                        _ A. Bartlett Giamatti

Guest Post From Scott Martell- Chief Editor of wiffjunkies.com

The WIFFLE ball off-season in New England, represents time away from competition and a chance to reflect on the season while looking forward to the next one. This past year has brought numerous unfortunate circumstances, which have made me stand back and notice the big picture. I’ve realized, that I have more reasons to be thankful than remorseful.

First, the obvious and most important. I’m Thankful for my Family and friends, their health and well being.
The opportunity to be a United States Citizen. I’m not condoning drug use, but I do like some of the music that’s been created because of it.

I’m thankful to live in New England; The hot bed for wiffle competition has given me a vantage point of the game, few get to see. I’ve faced top players and have had the opportunity to compete in various formats.
I owe a debt of gratitude to WIFFLE Rock. Jeff Hammond’s record setting tournament was my introduction to this Sport. Without it, I never would’ve seen my first WIFFLE Tournament featuring over 150 teams, and hosted in my own home town. I’m lucky to have met so many great people through this sport and community of players, organizers and enthusiasts. I can legitimately say they are my second family.

I’m fortunate to live with-in a few miles of Adam Trotta and Jack Caton. These two WIFFLE legends helped shape my interest in the sport, and there’s more than one of us who owes these two vets for their contributions. About an hour up the road from my house is where the Golden Stick magic happens. Lou Levesque has taken my perception of competitive WIFFLE ball, and flipped it on its head. I appreciate the opportunity to contribute to a league that’s effected this sport so significantly. Setting up fields early on weekend mornings becomes daunting, but I’m thankful to even have any form of work, doing what I love, and getting outdoor exercise in the process.

According to Nick Benas, “I’ve landed on WIFFLE ball’s Plymouth Rock.” (It’s pure luck that I get to live so close to the action.) Nick Benas loves WIFFLE ball. Growing up with close ties to the Mullany family, the BLWB commissioner has impacted this game with his ambitious ventures. Arguably one of WIFFLE ball’s first entrepreneur’s, he created a clothing company, organized events and connected players through new mediums; all while getting heat from a licensing company. We owe him for more than just the content he provides and his application of social media and marketing to get the word of WIFFLE ball out to the masses. His credentials range from landing the sport on ABC, NESN, YES, Fox and NBC TV. Fenway Park, 2011 MLB Allstar game in Phoenix AZ, CT state games, ESPN, The Playboy Mansion and the Huffington Post to name a few. The most appreciated feat among the list, his service to this country as a United States Marine and Iraqi combat veteran. Thank You Nick.

I’m thankful for WIFFLE ball because of the distraction it provides from this crazy f’d up world.

Finally, a big thank you goes out to the Internet, indoor plumbing, electricity, fire, the wheel, gravity, and the written word. I urge all readers, take a little time to notice what’s important. If you have the means and ability, please help those who are less fortunate. Below is a great place to get started.
